The Eilts Essay - An Essay About Enemies of the State

The Eilts Essay - An Essay About Enemies of the StateThe Eilts Essay, or 'Enemy of the State' as it is sometimes called, is an essay written by Ernest Hemingway. Hemingway wrote the Eilts Essay while serving a prison sentence. It was not exactly autobiographical, but it did involve the jail where he was incarcerated and that made it a bit more personal for him.Hemingway was not only a very popular and powerful author, but also a great writer in general. In the case of this particular essay, I believe that it is perhaps one of his most personal writings. The title is derived from a character in The Sun Also Rises by Ernest Hemingway. This is when that same character, Major von Vesper, mentions in passing that he 'did not intend to come to the war with any more Frenchmen.' When you read this passage in its entirety, it is hard to determine whether or not he actually meant to arrive at the end of his sentence with no more Frenchmen on the American side. Either way, the point stands: he w as on the Allied side of the war.The story about his prison makes the story even more poignant, as he eventually becomes an enemy of the United States. This stands in stark contrast to the role that the French were so fond of playing in World War I. Hemingway was not only an enemy of the French but also the Germans. After the war was over, however, the United States was very much an enemy of Germany. It is a wonderful thing to have an essay like the Eilts essay. It is something that anyone can relate to because it also involves the fact that we are all enemies of some other nation. For those of us who believe that we do not belong there, it is a comfort to know that others in similar circumstances know what it is like to be loyal Americans and enemies of those who would wish to destroy us.At the same time, it is also something that someone who comes from the opposing side could find intimidating. It is important to remember that if you are going to write the Eilts essay, you must try to give yourself a reason for being loyal to the United States and an enemy of that country. If you do not want to be that, then do not write it.In addition to being an enemy of France, the Eilts essay tells of how Hemingway used his personality as a weapon against those that he hated. He wrote hundreds of letters in a single day while in prison, and you can imagine how much time he spent writing them. You can do the same thing while being an enemy of an opposing nation. An essay like the Eilts essay can be very enlightening and cathartic. There is no better way to feel solidarity with someone who has spent his or her life in a prison cell. You will want to read the essay when you get to a good place in your life, and you can do so in as little as two minutes.
